All,
Our first of two instructional meetings will be held Wednesday, March 10. At that time, I will remind you of the 2020 Rule Changes and then we will go over the classification exam. I have a video prepared that covers the pertinent rules references, any necessary explanation of the rule, and finally the correct answer. All members are expected to attend, including 1st-year officials. Even if you are not officiating football this spring you may want to attend as this test and all the 2020 testing will be used in the fall. In other words, I’m not going to ask you to do 6 new tests in the fall. The meeting will be held via Zoom. The meeting information is below. I will open up the online Classification test on the 10th  in the Arbiter Central Hub. You can fill it out as we go or note the correct answers and fill them in later. I will be taking attendance via the Zoom report of who attended the meeting, so please use your proper name when joining the meeting. If you do not already have Zoom on your computer or phone you can download the app for your device here https://zoom.us/download  If you’re not familiar with Zoom there are several good tutorials here https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206618765-Zoom-Video-Tutorials.
Here are some tips for a successful Zoom experience.

  • If you have a poor internet connection, you might want to consider viewing the meeting at another official’s home.
Close all other programs you have running while attending the Zoom meeting. Dropbox and Carbonite are particularly known to cause problems.
If possible, plug an ethernet cable directly into your computer rather than using a wi-fi connection.
Make sure your anti-virus software does not run a scan during the meeting.
If you are going to join the meeting via phone, you are going to have a hard time viewing the video. If possible, cast the meeting to a compatible television using Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku etc

If you have a question during the presentation you can submit it via the chat feature, send it to Troy Leonard. I will also be available after the test is complete for any questions.
If there is interest, I will conduct a short dry run meeting on Tuesday. Let me know if there is interest.

The Instructional Meeting on Wednesday will begin at 6:30. I will open up the meeting at 6 pm so that people who are using Zoom for the first time can try it prior to the meeting. Todd Summers will be conducting a dry run of the Zoom connection tomorrow from 5pm – 7pm., Use the same login information that I sent out on Saturday, Todd will post a document and have music playing. If you can see the document and hear the music, you are good to go. If you are experiencing problems please contact Todd at 949 244-7432 that goes for Wednesday as well. Do not try to call me during the meeting. If you have questions during the meeting, please use the Chat feature on the menu at the bottom of the screen. If you can’t see the menu, simply move your cursor down to the bottom of the screen and it will pop up. Send the question directly to Troy Leonard. The default for the chat is “Everyone” don’t do that. Click on the dropdown and choose Troy Leonard. As I stated before I will be available for questions after the meeting.

The season begins in 3 days. The default uniform non-varsity games is the Varsity uniform. If you want to wear shorts, everyone on the crew must agree to wear shorts. If you do wear shorts, wear 1/4 length black socks. It is recommended that you wear longsleeved shirts, but it is not required. Masks are required. I’ve been asked about shields instead of a mask. The CIF guidelines only mention masks. The CDC does not recommend shields as their efficacy is unproven. Protect yourself and those around you and wear a mask. Speaking of guidelines, the two links below are the CIF Covid Guidelines and the OCFOA Covid guidelines. Be sure you have reviewed both documents prior to officiating. These should be covered thoroughly in pregame. The third link below is a summary of questions posed to the CIF by CFOA IC’s. It clarifies a number of issues.
